Cairo – Best for First-Time Visitors
Cairo is the starting point for most trips and the base for the pyramids, the big museums and the old city. It is large and busy, so group your sites by area instead of crossing the city several times a day. For ideas, see things to do in Cairo and Cairo day tours for first-time visitors.
Why Visit Cairo
- The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. The Pyramids of Giza stand on the plateau west of the city. A private Giza half day is the simplest way to see them.
- The Grand Egyptian Museum and the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir. The Grand Egyptian Museum and the older museum in Tahrir Square hold the collections most visitors come for; this comparison helps you choose.
- Islamic Cairo and Khan El Khalili. Mosques, medieval gates and the bazaar are around Al-Muizz Street.
- Coptic Cairo. Coptic Cairo holds the Hanging Church and some of the city's oldest churches.
Best for: first-time visitors, museum and history lovers, and travelers who want several very different days from one base. Suggested stay: 2 to 3 days. Best time: the cooler months; the average July high is 34.8 °C against 19.0 °C in January. All trips: Cairo and Giza tours.
Luxor – Best for Ancient Egyptian History
Luxor stands on the site of ancient Thebes and is the city for temples and tombs. Thebes lay on both banks of the Nile, so a visit usually splits into an east bank day and a west bank day; West Bank or East Bank explains how.
Main Sights
- Karnak Temple. A vast temple complex with towering columns, on the east bank (private Karnak tour).
- Luxor Temple. Luxor Temple stands in the middle of the city and is often visited in the late afternoon; Karnak or Luxor Temple helps if you can only see one.
- The Valley of the Kings. The Valley of the Kings on the west bank holds the royal tombs. The standard ticket covers a set number of tombs, and Tutankhamun's tomb is an optional extra ticket on the tours that list it (private tour).
The Nile and the Balloons
Luxor is also a Nile city. A sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the west bank is a popular morning, and many Nile cruises start or end here (day tours from a Nile cruise).
Best for: ancient history, temples and tombs. Suggested stay: 2 to 3 days. Best season: the cooler months, because the average July high is 41.4 °C. More: things to do in Luxor and Luxor day tours.
Aswan – Best for Nile Scenery and Nubian Culture
Aswan is smaller and slower than Cairo or Luxor. It sits on a bend of the Nile among islands and granite rocks, and it is the base for Abu Simbel. See Aswan in one day for a first plan.
What Makes Aswan Special
- Philae Temple. Philae Temple, a temple of Isis moved to an island, is reached by a short boat ride (private tour).
- Nubian villages and culture. Nubian houses, tea and music (Nubian village tour).
- Elephantine Island and the Nile. A felucca sail passes Elephantine Island and Kitchener's Island (felucca ride).
- The Unfinished Obelisk and the High Dam. Both are close to town; see the place guide.
- Abu Simbel as an excursion. The Abu Simbel day trip is a long road day: 283.4 km each way, about 3 h 26 min without traffic.
Best for: a calm pace, Nile views and Nubian culture. Suggested stay: 2 days. Best season: the cooler months; the average July high is 41.4 °C. More: things to do in Aswan and Aswan day tours.
Alexandria – Best for Mediterranean Culture
Founded by Alexander the Great, Alexandria keeps Greek and Roman layers beside the Egyptian ones. It is the city for sea air and a day away from the temples.
Highlights of Alexandria
- The Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Citadel of Qaitbay. A modern library and a harbor fort: place guide.
- Roman history. The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, Pompey's Pillar and the Roman theater: Roman sites.
- The Corniche, seafood and the coast. The seafront road is where most of the walks, cafes and seafood meals are.
Visiting from Cairo: the Catacombs are 216.1 km from a Cairo hotel, about 2 h 26 min without traffic, so many travelers make it a long day trip (guide); our Alexandria day tour starts in the city. Suggested stay: 1 to 2 days. Best season: Alexandria is the coolest of the cities with climate data here, with an average July high of 29.9 °C. More: things to do in Alexandria.
Sharm El Sheikh – Best for Snorkeling and Resorts
Sharm El Sheikh is a resort city at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, known for coral reefs and warm water, and the base for Mount Sinai.
What to Do
- Ras Mohammed National Park and the reefs. The park and the Tiran Island area are reached by boat; see Ras Mohammed and White Island and our Ras Mohammed snorkeling trip.
- Snorkeling and diving. Both are popular in the area. Our boat days are snorkeling days: Egypt Day Tours does not offer diving.
- Desert excursions. Quad bikes, camels and a Bedouin dinner are offered on desert safaris.
- Mount Sinai and St Catherine's Monastery. A night climb for sunrise, then the monastery (how the climb runs).
Suggested stay: 3 to 5 days. Best season: the cooler months for sightseeing, with an average July high of 37.9 °C against 21.9 °C in January; the sea is warm for much of the year. Compare options in Sharm day trips compared and see all Sharm trips.
Hurghada – Best for Families and Red Sea Activities
Hurghada is a long strip of resorts on the Red Sea coast, practical for families and sea days.
Key Attractions
Suggested stay: 3 to 5 days. Best season: sea days work for much of the year; the average July high is 35.0 °C against 21.7 °C in January. More: things to do in Hurghada and Hurghada day tours.
Marsa Alam – Best for Quiet Red Sea Escapes
Marsa Alam lies further south, with fewer resorts and a quieter coast: reefs and marine life without the crowds of the larger resort towns.
Why Marsa Alam Stands Out
Suggested stay: 3 to 5 days. More: Marsa Alam day trips and the Marsa Alam page.
Siwa Oasis – Best for Desert Adventures
Siwa Oasis lies in the Western Desert near the Libyan border, far from the Nile cities. Because of the distance it is the one place on this list where we run multi-day trips instead of day tours.
What to See
- The Temple of the Oracle of Amun. The oracle that Alexander the Great is recorded as having consulted.
- Salt lakes and desert landscapes. Water and dunes side by side, with swimming in the lakes on the longer trips.
- Local culture and eco-lodges. The old mud-brick town and the oasis way of life; the trips stay in a lodge, confirmed with your quote.
Travel from Cairo: the road is about 750 km each way, with stops. Suggested stay: 2 to 3 days, not counting the long transfers; our trips run from two to four days (Siwa in three days; all on the Siwa page).
Which Egyptian City Should You Visit?
| Traveler interest | Recommended destination |
| Pyramids and museums | Cairo |
| Ancient temples and tombs | Luxor |
| Nile landscapes and Nubian culture | Aswan |
| Mediterranean atmosphere | Alexandria |
| Snorkeling and reefs | Sharm El Sheikh |
| Family beach activities | Hurghada |
| Quieter coastal experiences | Marsa Alam |
| Desert landscapes and oasis culture | Siwa |
Start with the interest that matters most to you, pick the city in the right column, and then add a second or third from the table above if you have the days. Pairing one Nile city with one sea city is a common balance. If you only have a single day in Egypt, which city and which tour narrows it down.
How Many Days Should You Spend in Each City?
The suggested stays in the table above count time spent exploring the destination, not the time it takes to get there. Cairo, Luxor and Aswan carry many monuments, so two to three days each is comfortable. Alexandria can be seen in a long day or an easy two days. The Red Sea resorts need more days because the draw is time on and in the water, with the occasional excursion; three to five days suits most visitors. Siwa asks for the most planning: the road from Cairo is about 750 km each way, so the days on the ground are a short part of a longer trip. For a city-by-city breakdown for day tours, see how many days for day tours by city.
Best Cities to Visit in Egypt by Season
The cooler months, about October to April, are the most comfortable for sightseeing across much of Egypt. The table shows the average daily highs for the cities where we have climate data.
| City | January daily high | July daily high |
| Cairo | 19.0 °C | 34.8 °C |
| Luxor | 23.0 °C | 41.4 °C |
| Aswan | 22.9 °C | 41.4 °C |
| Alexandria | 18.3 °C | 29.9 °C |
| Hurghada | 21.7 °C | 35.0 °C |
| Sharm El Sheikh | 21.9 °C | 37.9 °C |
In summer, Luxor and Aswan are the hottest of these cities, so temple days are best done early. Cairo is cooler but still hot in the afternoon. The Mediterranean coast around Alexandria is the mildest, and the Red Sea resorts suit days spent on the water. Heat changes how you plan the day more than where you go: an early start, a midday rest and indoor or water-based activities in the afternoon. For more, see summer heat and Egypt day tours.
How to Travel Between Egypt's Main Cities
- Domestic flights. Flights connect Cairo with Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea resorts and save the most time. Some of our long days are by plane; the flights are booked separately and are never part of a tour price (day trips by plane).
- Trains and sleeper trains. Sleeper trains run overnight from Giza to Upper Egypt: about 9 h 25 min to 10 h 10 min to Luxor and 12 h 25 min to 13 h 30 min to Aswan, on the timetables we have checked. Schedules change, so confirm them before you plan.
- Private road transfers. A private car reaches Alexandria, the Red Sea and the oases. Siwa is the longest road in this guide, about 750 km each way from Cairo.
Plan the route so you do not double back: for example, fly one way and return by train or road, and keep the longest legs for days with nothing else planned. To ask for a plan on short notice, see booking for tomorrow or today.
Best Egyptian Cities to Combine in One Trip
These are suggested combinations, not packages we sell.
- Cairo + Luxor + Aswan. The classic first trip: monuments in the capital, then the Nile valley. It suits travelers who mainly want history.
- Cairo + Alexandria. A short, easy pair: pyramids and museums, then a Mediterranean day. It suits a short stay.
- Cairo + Hurghada. Sightseeing first, then sea days to rest. It suits travelers who want a beach finish.
- Luxor + Aswan. A Nile-only trip, often combined with a Nile cruise. It suits those who already know Cairo.
- Cairo + Luxor + a Red Sea destination. History and a beach in one trip; choose Marsa Alam for quiet or Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh for choice.
