In short
  • Our full-day Cairo tours are private for your group, with an English-speaking Egyptologist; most include lunch.
  • Saqqara is on two days, Pyramids, Memphis and Saqqara and Saqqara, Dahshur and Memphis; the Citadel and Coptic Cairo share two full days and each has a half day.
  • The Tutankhamun Galleries are at the Grand Egyptian Museum: see it as a half day, with the pyramids, or with the Tahrir museum.
  • Half days of about 3 to 5 hours cover one site or area: the pyramids, one museum, the Citadel, Coptic Cairo or Islamic Cairo.
  • From New Cairo the first leg to the pyramids is 45.3 km, about 42 minutes without traffic; from a Giza hotel near the pyramids it is 1.8 km.

There is no single best tour; choose by what you want to see. Grand Egyptian Museum and the pyramids pairs Giza with the Tutankhamun Galleries. Pyramids, Memphis and Saqqara adds Saqqara and Memphis to Giza. Egyptian Museum, the Citadel and Coptic Cairo stays in the city. Booked on different days, the Citadel tour plus either of the other two sees no site twice. With less time, a half day covers one site in about 3 to 5 hours.

Our Cairo tours compared

Lengths are as each tour describes itself; each tour page lists the stops in order, with approximate times. An Egyptologist is a guide trained in ancient Egyptian history. On the newest tours, the program follows how the day usually runs and is confirmed with your quote.

Which tour covers what

  • The pyramids and the Sphinx up close: the full days that start at Giza and the Giza pyramids and the Sphinx half day. The sound and light show is on the plateau in the evening, and the quad ride sees the pyramids from the desert.
  • Tutankhamun: the Tutankhamun Galleries are at the Grand Egyptian Museum, in its standard admission, so go with Grand Egyptian Museum and the pyramids, the GEM half day, the two museums, or pyramids and both museums.
  • The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir: Giza pyramids and the Egyptian Museum, the Citadel tour, the Tahrir half day, the two museums, or pyramids and both museums.
  • Saqqara and Memphis: Pyramids, Memphis and Saqqara, or Saqqara, Dahshur and Memphis, which adds the Red and Bent Pyramids instead of Giza.
  • The Citadel and Coptic Cairo: Egyptian Museum, the Citadel and Coptic Cairo, or Coptic and Islamic Cairo in a day; each also has its own half day.
  • Islamic Cairo and Khan El Khalili: the Islamic Cairo half day, Coptic and Islamic Cairo in a day, or the Khan El Khalili walk. The Coptic Cairo or Islamic Cairo guide compares the two areas.
  • The Nile: the felucca ride or the dinner cruise.
  • The royal mummies: the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) half day, which visits the Royal Mummies Hall; our Cairo museums comparison explains where each collection is.
  • Food: the street food tour or the cooking class.

Two days without repeating a site

  • Grand Egyptian Museum and the pyramids, then Egyptian Museum, the Citadel and Coptic Cairo: both museums, the pyramids, the Citadel and Coptic Cairo.
  • Pyramids, Memphis and Saqqara, then the Citadel tour: the pyramids, Saqqara and Memphis, plus the Tahrir museum, but not the Grand Egyptian Museum.
  • Grand Egyptian Museum and the pyramids, then Saqqara, Dahshur and Memphis: the pyramids, the GEM, Dahshur, Saqqara and Memphis.
  • Pairs that repeat: any two of the full days that start at Giza visit the pyramids twice, and Giza pyramids and the Egyptian Museum plus the Citadel tour visits the Tahrir museum twice.

For an evening, the dinner cruise and the Tanoura show share no site with any day tour, while the sound and light show returns to the Giza Plateau. For Giza against Saqqara, see Giza or Saqqara first.

How long the days run

The full days that state a length run from about 7 hours (the two museums) to about 11 hours (Alexandria from Cairo); Giza pyramids and the Egyptian Museum is about 8 hours, while Pyramids, Memphis and Saqqara, Grand Egyptian Museum and the pyramids, and the Citadel tour say only “full day”. The drive legs, all from map routing without traffic, show how the days differ. On Pyramids, Memphis and Saqqara, the longest legs are 29.3 km from Memphis back to the hotel (about 26 minutes) and 18.3 km from the Sphinx to Saqqara (about 27 minutes). On Giza pyramids and the Egyptian Museum, the Sphinx to the museum is 20.4 km (about 20 minutes). On the Citadel day, no drive between sites is longer than 6.8 km. Saqqara, Dahshur and Memphis starts with 40.1 km from your hotel to Dahshur (about 33 minutes).

Your hotel area changes the first leg of the pyramid tours: 1.8 km from a Giza hotel near the pyramids (about 4 minutes), 16.5 km from Downtown or Zamalek (about 20 minutes) and 45.3 km from New Cairo (about 42 minutes), all without traffic. The felucca and quad times count sailing or riding only; the hotel transfers come on top. For how pickup works, see hotel pickup for Cairo day tours.

What is included

Every full day and half day is private, for your group only, with an English-speaking Egyptologist, entrance fees to the sites in the program, water and taxes; tipping is not included. Lunch at a local restaurant comes on the full days marked “Lunch” in the table. The first four full days in the table end with an optional shopping stop at Khan El Khalili or near the pyramids, which you can skip. The sound and light evening includes dinner at a local restaurant. The dinner cruise includes the buffet and the entertainment; drinks are not mentioned either way. The felucca and quad tours list hotel transfers, water and taxes.
