The Pyramid of Khafre
In short
  • The Giza pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum are 6.8 km apart, about 11 min without traffic, so one Cairo tour does both.
  • In Luxor, one tour covers both banks: the Colossi of Memnon, Hatshepsut's temple, the Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Luxor Temple.
  • From Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Marsa Alam and Dahab, Cairo is a day by plane; domestic flights are never part of the tour price.
  • From Aswan, Abu Simbel is 283.4 km from your hotel, about 3 h 26 min without traffic.
  • From Cairo airport, the Giza pyramids are 41.5 km away, about 46 min without traffic.

With one day, the city you are in decides the tour, because our day tours start and end at your hotel. In Cairo, the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Giza pyramids fit in one full day. In Luxor, one tour covers both banks of the Nile. From the Red Sea resorts, Cairo is a day by plane and Luxor by road or plane, flights not included.

If you can choose the city

Cairo puts the pyramids and the Tutankhamun galleries a short drive apart: the Grand Egyptian Museum, where the galleries are, is 6.8 km from the Sphinx, about 11 min without traffic. Luxor puts temples and royal tombs in one day: the Valley of the Kings is the burial ground of New Kingdom pharaohs, and Karnak and Luxor Temple are 3.2 km apart. From Cairo, Luxor is also a day by plane: Luxor in a day from Cairo visits Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon, and the flights are not included in the tour price. From Aswan, the one-day choice, Abu Simbel, is a long day for two temples, 283.4 km from your hotel.

What are the best day trips from Cairo?

From a Cairo or Giza hotel, this site's full-day tours fall into three groups: the Giza pyramids with a museum or with Saqqara, central Cairo without the pyramids, and days that leave the city. Pyramids, Memphis and Saqqara adds two sites to Giza: Saqqara is 18.3 km from the Sphinx, about 27 min without traffic, and Memphis is 6.3 km from Saqqara. Of the days that leave the city, Alexandria in a day from Cairo drives 216.1 km to its first stop, about 2 h 26 min without traffic, and the Fayoum day 143.2 km, about 1 h 48 min.

One day between flights

If your one day is a stop between flights, start from the airport. Cairo on a layover meets you in the terminal and drives to the Giza pyramids, 41.5 km from Cairo airport, about 46 min without traffic, and the Sphinx, adding the Grand Egyptian Museum, 41.4 km from the airport, about 43 min, if your layover leaves time. Leaving the airport needs an Egypt entry visa, which the tour does not include. What fits in a Cairo layover works through it. With more than one day, see how many days to plan in each city.
