Cairo & GizaPlan your Cairo day

One full day or two half days in Cairo?

What a full Cairo day covers, which half days fit a morning, and when splitting the sights helps.

The Great Sphinx of Giza
In short
  • Half-day tours of about 4 hours cover the pyramids and the Sphinx, one museum, or Coptic Cairo.
  • The Grand Egyptian Museum is 6.8 km from the Sphinx; the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir is 20.4 km away, without traffic.
  • From New Cairo, the pyramids are 45.3 km away: each extra outing repeats that drive.
  • The Grand Egyptian Museum's last entry is 8 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 5 pm on other days.
  • The felucca sail and the quad ride last about 2 hours each on the water or the bike.

Both work on this site. The full days pair sites that stand close together, such as the pyramids with a museum, most of them with lunch. The half days, listed at about 4 hours each with an Egyptologist guide, take one part: the pyramids and the Sphinx, the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir or Coptic Cairo. Two half days cost a second hotel pickup but leave each afternoon free; one full day sees the same sites in a single outing.

Where a length is listed, it runs from about 7 hours (the two museums) to about 9 hours (the pyramids and both museums). Four of them start at the Giza pyramids. All include the entrance fees; lunch is included on all but the two-museums day (none listed) and Saqqara, Dahshur and Memphis (optional). The last four are newer tours: their programs follow how the market runs the day and are confirmed with your quote.

The half days

Grand Egyptian Museum with a guideThe Grand Hall, the Grand Staircase and the Tutankhamun GalleriesAbout 4 hours
The Egyptian Museum in TahrirThe galleries of the older museumAbout 4 hours
National Museum of Egyptian CivilizationThe main hall and the Royal Mummies HallAbout 3 to 4 hours

Islamic Cairo and Al-Muizz StreetThe Al-Azhar Mosque, Al-Muizz Street and Khan El KhaliliAbout 4 to 5 hours

Each is private, with an English-speaking Egyptologist guide, hotel pickup and return, and the entrance fees; none lists lunch. They are newer tours too, confirmed with your quote. Two of them can hold one full day's sites: the pyramids half day plus the Grand Egyptian Museum half day cover the Grand Egyptian Museum and the pyramids day; Coptic Cairo plus Islamic Cairo cover most of the Coptic and Islamic Cairo day.

When two half days make sense

Splitting costs a second pickup, because every tour starts and ends at your hotel. Without traffic, the pyramids are 1.8 km from a Giza hotel near the plateau, 16.5 km from Downtown or Zamalek and 45.3 km from New Cairo. From Giza, a second outing adds little road time; from New Cairo, it repeats a 45.3 km drive.

Heat is the other reason. Cairo's average daily high is 34.6°C in June, 34.8°C in July and 34.5°C in August. A shorter day is easier in summer, and a stop can be skipped or the order changed where the tour allows, if you ask before booking.

The felucca and the quad ride are not halves of a sightseeing day: the felucca is about 2 hours of sailing, in the morning or at sunset, and the quad ride about 2 hours of riding by the pyramids. Both figures are time on the water or the bike, not the whole outing.

Closing times shape the afternoon

The Ministry advises arriving at least one hour before a site's closing time. If you split your sightseeing, a Wednesday or Saturday is the day to keep the Grand Egyptian Museum for later.

Questions

What to do in Cairo in four hours?

Take one half day: the Giza pyramids and the Sphinx, the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir or Coptic Cairo, each listed at about 4 hours. For something lighter, the private felucca sail is about 2 hours on the Nile in the morning or at sunset, and the quad bike ride at the Giza pyramids about 2 hours of riding in the afternoon or at sunset. The pickup time is confirmed when you book.

A simple plan

  • One full day: the pyramids with one of the two museums, or with both.
  • Or two half days: the pyramids and the Sphinx one morning, the Grand Egyptian Museum another.
  • A second day: Coptic and Islamic Cairo, as one full day or as two half days (see Coptic Cairo or Islamic Cairo).
  • An evening or a sunset: the felucca, the quad ride, the sound and light show or the dinner cruise.
