Coptic Cairo or Islamic Cairo: which half day?

Al-Muizz Street in Islamic Cairo
In short
  • Our Coptic Cairo half day, about 4 hours: the Hanging Church, the Church of St. Sergius and the Ben Ezra Synagogue.
  • Our Islamic Cairo half day, about 4 to 5 hours: the Al-Azhar Mosque, a walk along Al-Muizz Street and Khan El Khalili.
  • Both in one day: our Coptic and Islamic Cairo day adds the Citadel and Sultan Hassan, with lunch included.
  • The Citadel, Al-Muizz Street, the Coptic Museum and the Museum of Islamic Art all list a last entry of 4 pm outside Ramadan.
  • Dress modestly in mosques and souqs (UK travel advice).

Pick Coptic Cairo for a compact visit: the Hanging Church, the Church of St. Sergius and the Ben Ezra Synagogue stand near each other. Pick Islamic Cairo for the Citadel, the Mosque of Mohamed Ali and Islamic-era monuments such as Al-Muizz Street. On this site each side is a half day of its own: Coptic Cairo, about 4 hours, and Islamic Cairo and Al-Muizz Street, about 4 to 5 hours. Coptic and Islamic Cairo in a day joins them.

Islamic Cairo is wider than any one tour. The Ministry's ticketing portal sells tickets for Al-Muizz Street, Bab Zuweila, the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan and the Gayer-Anderson Museum, and the Museum of Islamic Art and the Coptic Museum have their own tickets. Historic Cairo has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1979.

A day with both: two ways

The Coptic and Islamic Cairo day, listed at about 8 hours, keeps to the two districts: the Citadel and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali; the Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan, 1 km from the Citadel; the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra Synagogue, 6 km from Sultan Hassan (about 7 min without traffic); lunch at a local restaurant; then Al-Muizz Street, 8.8 km from Coptic Cairo (about 10 min), and Khan El Khalili.

The Egyptian Museum, the Citadel and Coptic Cairo tour starts with the museum instead, and its only Islamic-era stop is the Citadel; Al-Muizz Street is not on it:

  1. Pickup at your hotel. From Downtown or Zamalek, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir is 1.3 km, about 2 min without traffic.
  2. Egyptian Museum: a guided visit to the Pharaonic collections.
  3. The Citadel and the Mosque of Mohamed Ali: 4.8 km from the museum, about 8 min without traffic.
  4. Lunch at a local restaurant.
  5. The Hanging Church: 6.8 km from the Citadel, about 9 min without traffic.
  6. The Church of St. Sergius and the Ben Ezra Synagogue.
  7. An optional shopping stop at Khan El Khalili or near the pyramids, which you can skip.
  8. Back to your hotel: from Coptic Cairo, 6.3 km to Downtown or Zamalek (about 6 min), 15.3 km to Giza near the pyramids (about 16 min) or 32.1 km to New Cairo (about 32 min), without traffic.

If you want only one side

Each half day is private, from your hotel in Cairo or Giza, with an English-speaking Egyptologist guide and the entrance fees:

  • Coptic Cairo, about 4 hours: the Hanging Church, the Church of St. Sergius (Abu Serga) and the Ben Ezra Synagogue.
  • Islamic Cairo and Al-Muizz Street, about 4 to 5 hours: the Al-Azhar Mosque, a walk along Al-Muizz Street, then free time in Khan El Khalili.
  • The Citadel and Muhammad Ali Mosque, about 3 to 4 hours: the fortress on the Muqattam hills, its view over Cairo, and the mosque inside it.
  • For the bazaar alone, the Khan El Khalili walk, about 3 hours in the afternoon or evening, with an English-speaking guide.

These half days and the Coptic and Islamic Cairo day are newer tours: their programs follow how the market runs the day and are confirmed with your quote. A stop can be skipped or the order changed where the tour allows: ask before booking and you are told what is possible.

  • Choose Coptic Cairo for churches and a synagogue in one compact area.
  • Choose Islamic Cairo if the mosques, the medieval street and the bazaar matter more; add the Citadel half day for the Citadel.
  • Keep both if you can: the full day joins them.

Dress and photos

UK government travel advice (checked August 2026) asks visitors to dress modestly, especially in mosques and souqs, the traditional markets. At Ministry sites, photography with a mobile phone is free of charge.
