In short
  • Cairo airport to the Giza pyramids: 41.5 km, about 46 minutes without traffic.
  • Grand Egyptian Museum back to the airport: 41.4 km, about 43 minutes without traffic.
  • Leaving the airport means entering Egypt: a visa on arrival is USD 30, cash only (as of August 2026).
  • The Grand Egyptian Museum's last entry is 8 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 5 pm on other days.
  • Our Cairo on a layover tour meets you at Cairo airport and brings you back there; the Egypt entry visa is not included.

Cairo airport is 41.5 km from the Giza pyramids, about 46 min without traffic, so a long layover can hold the pyramids and, with more time, the Grand Egyptian Museum. First you must be able to enter Egypt with a visa. Our Cairo on a layover tour is built for this: your guide meets you in the terminal, and the day runs to the pyramids, the Sphinx and, if your layover leaves time, the Grand Egyptian Museum, then back to the airport.

Can I leave Cairo airport during a layover?

Yes, if you can enter Egypt: leaving the airport means passing immigration, and the checked sources list these tourist visas.

VisaFee, as of August 2026How you payValid for

The e-visa portal lists 79 countries and territories, the US among them; check the live list for your passport. The visa-on-arrival details and the validity periods come from UK government travel advice. Your airline's transit and baggage rules are not in these sources, so check them before you plan to leave the airport.

How close is Cairo Airport to the pyramids?

41.5 km, about 46 min without traffic: the leg our layover tour and our by-plane tours drive from Cairo airport to the Giza pyramids. The other legs a layover would use, from the same tours:

FromToWithout traffic
Cairo airportGiza pyramids41.5 km, about 46 min
Cairo airportGrand Egyptian Museum42.8 km, about 44 min
Grand Egyptian MuseumGiza pyramids4.9 km, about 9 min

Grand Egyptian MuseumCairo airport41.4 km, about 43 min
Grand Egyptian MuseumKhan El Khalili20.6 km, about 23 min

These come from map routing on an empty road, so treat them as the shortest each drive can take.

What fits between flights

The layover tour lists about 8 hours between flights, with a private English-speaking Egyptologist guide and the entrance fees to the sites in the program. Your guide meets you in the terminal with a name sign, takes you to the pyramids and the Sphinx, adds the Grand Egyptian Museum if your layover leaves time, and plans the day around your next flight. Not included: the Egypt entry visa, going inside the Great Pyramid (an optional extra) and tipping. It is a newer tour: its program follows how the market runs the day and is confirmed with your quote, and the guide checks your nationality for the visa first.

Our Cairo days by plane show a fuller day. On the Cairo day from Hurghada, for example, you land at Cairo airport, see the pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple, have lunch, visit the Grand Egyptian Museum and walk through Khan El Khalili before the flight back. The flights are not included in the tour price on any of these days. Egypt day trips by plane explains how they work.

Opening hours set the limit. The Giza Plateau's last entry is 4 pm on the Ministry's ticketing portal, while another official page gives 8 am to 4 pm. The Grand Egyptian Museum's galleries open at 9 am, with last entry at 5 pm, except Wednesdays and Saturdays, when last entry is 8 pm.

  • A daytime layover: the pyramids and the Sphinx first, then the Grand Egyptian Museum, the order the layover tour and most of our by-plane days use.
  • Landing after the plateau's last entry: on a Wednesday or Saturday, the Grand Egyptian Museum keeps last entry until 8 pm.
  • A night in a Cairo or Giza hotel: then any of our Cairo day tours can collect you there. Giza pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum in one day covers that day.

Booking around a layover

Send your flight times with your request: the layover tour's guide plans the day around your next flight. If your layover is shorter than the tour lists, or you want a different plan, ask through the contact page before booking. Tickets at the monuments are priced in Egyptian pounds; at Giza, self-service machines accept bank cards for site tickets, though card payment is not guaranteed at every site. More Cairo options are on our Cairo page.
