- The Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum are 6.8 km apart, about 11 minutes without traffic.
- The Giza plateau's last entry is 4 p.m.; the museum's galleries take visitors until 5 p.m., or 8 p.m. on Saturdays and Wednesdays.
- Our Cairo tours do the plateau first and the museum after; the Sharm El Sheikh by-plane day reverses the order.
- Museum tickets are online only, with a timed entry slot, so the visit runs at a set time.
- Going inside the Great Pyramid is an optional extra, not included.
Yes. The Giza pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) are 6.8 km apart, about 11 minutes without traffic, and their hours leave room for both. The usual order is the plateau first, then lunch, then the museum, whose galleries take visitors later in the day than the plateau does. Several tours on this site combine the two: from a hotel in Cairo or Giza, from Cairo airport on a layover, or by plane from other cities.
Why the plateau usually comes first
The two sites close at different times. The Giza plateau stops letting visitors in at 4 p.m., and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities advises arriving at least one hour before a site's closing time. The GEM's galleries keep their last entry later.
| Giza plateau | Grand Egyptian Museum galleries | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens | 7 a.m. (ticketing portal) or 8 a.m. (site page): the two official sources differ | 9 a.m.; the museum complex opens 8:30 a.m. |
| Last entry | 4 p.m. (the site page gives 4 p.m. as closing) | 5 p.m.; 8 p.m. on Saturday and Wednesday |
| Ramadan | 8 a.m., last entry 3:30 p.m. | Not in our checked facts |
| Tickets | Ministry ticket; card machines at Giza | Online only, in advance, timed entry slot |
Hours as published in August 2026. With a 4 p.m. cutoff at Giza and a 5 p.m. or 8 p.m. one at the museum, the plateau first is the order with more slack. On a Saturday or a Wednesday the museum's late night gives even more. For the plateau's hours in detail, see Best time of day to visit the Giza pyramids.
