The Giza pyramids stand on a rocky plateau on the west bank of the Nile, at the edge of the city of Giza, which faces central Cairo across the river. They are 16.5 km from a hotel in Downtown or Zamalek, about 20 minutes without traffic. So a pyramids visit fits easily into a day from Cairo, and our tours pick up from hotels in both Cairo and Giza.
Where are the pyramids located?
Encyclopaedia Britannica places the three 4th-dynasty pyramids, built around 2575 to 2465 BCE, on a rocky plateau on the west bank of the Nile near Giza. The Great Sphinx lies south of the Great Pyramid, near the valley temple of Khafre. That high, open ground is what people mean by the Giza plateau: the area with its own Ministry ticket, its own hours and the evening sound and light show.

| Cairo | The capital, across the Nile | Downtown, Zamalek, New Cairo; the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square; the Citadel; Coptic Cairo |
The two museums people mix up sit on opposite sides of this map. The Grand Egyptian Museum, which holds the Tutankhamun Galleries, is in Giza, 6.8 km from the Sphinx. The Egyptian Museum is in Tahrir Square, central Cairo.
