A monastery in Wadi El Natrun
In short
  • El Alamein: 107.6 km from your hotel to the War Museum, about 1 h 35 min without traffic, and 105.6 km back, about 86 min.
  • Wadi El Natrun: 133.7 km to Deir al-Baramus, about 1 h 46 min without traffic, and 131.6 km back, about 1 h 42 min.
  • Both are private, with an English-speaking guide and entrance fees included; lunch is optional and not included on either.
  • More than 7,000 Allied soldiers are buried at the Commonwealth War Cemetery at El Alamein.
  • Deir al-Baramus is considered the oldest of the surviving monasteries of Wadi El Natrun.

Pick El Alamein for World War II history: a war museum, the Commonwealth War Cemetery and the German and Italian memorials. Pick Wadi El Natrun for three Coptic monasteries. Both are private days from your Alexandria hotel with an English-speaking guide and entrance fees included, and neither includes lunch. El Alamein has the shorter drive: 107.6 km to the first stop, against 133.7 km, without traffic.

The two days side by side

Coptic is the name of Egypt's Christian church. Both tours are listed as private, just your group. The drive figures come from map routing without traffic, so read them as the shortest each leg can take.

El Alamein: the war sites

Your representative and tour guide pick you up in the morning, and the drive runs west along the Mediterranean coast. The El Alamein War Museum, also called the Military Museum, holds military vehicles, tanks, weapons and photographs from World War II, with explanations of the two 1942 battles. The Commonwealth War Cemetery, 1 km away, is where more than 7,000 Allied soldiers are buried. The German War Memorial and the Italian Memorial honor the soldiers of the Axis forces, the side Germany and Italy fought on; they are two separate sites.

Wadi El Natrun: the monasteries

Deir al-Baramus, the first stop, is considered the oldest of the surviving monasteries of Wadi El Natrun. The Monastery of Saint Bishoy, 12 km on (about 25 min without traffic), preserves the body of Saint Bishoy and is an active center of Coptic monastic life. The Syrian Monastery, or Deir El-Suryani, is 0.1 km from St Bishoy: a smaller monastery known for its old frescoes, paintings made on wet plaster. The tour's data give the length of the drive from Alexandria but don't describe the road.

Our sources give no dress rules for the monasteries. The UK government's travel advice for Egypt is to dress modestly, especially in rural areas, mosques and souqs (markets).

Which day fits you

  • Less time on the road: El Alamein, at 107.6 km out and 105.6 km back, against 133.7 km and 131.6 km for Wadi El Natrun, all without traffic.
  • Military history: El Alamein, where the museum explains the two 1942 battles.
  • Religious history and art: Wadi El Natrun, with an active monastery and a smaller one known for its frescoes.
  • The coast: the drive to El Alamein runs west along the Mediterranean.
  • Lunch: neither tour includes it; on the Wadi El Natrun day the itinerary places a lunch stop before the return, so ask about it when you book.

Other days from Alexandria

To stay in the city, the Alexandria day tour covers the catacombs, Qaitbay and five other stops, with lunch included; the city tour guide walks through it. Two more tours from Alexandria go to Giza: the pyramids and the Sphinx, 214.5 km from your hotel, and the Grand Egyptian Museum, 211.3 km, both without traffic.
