The Bibliotheca Alexandrina
In short
  • Seven stops in one private day: the Kom El Shoqafa catacombs, the Roman Theater, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Pompey's Pillar, Qaitbay, the Montaza gardens and Stanley Bridge.
  • The longest drive between stops is Qaitbay to the Montaza gardens: 19 km, about 25 minutes without traffic.
  • Entrance fees, an Egyptologist guide, a private air-conditioned vehicle and lunch at a local restaurant are included.
  • The catacombs date from the 2nd century AD; Qaitbay is a 15th-century fortress built on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria.
  • At Montaza you see the royal gardens; the palace is seen from the outside.

The Alexandria day tour covers seven places in one private day from your hotel: the Kom El Shoqafa catacombs, the Roman Theater, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Pompey's Pillar and the Citadel of Qaitbay, then lunch, the Montaza Palace gardens and Stanley Bridge. Entrance fees, an Egyptologist guide and lunch are included, and no drive between two stops is longer than 19 km without traffic.

The stops in order

An Egyptologist is a guide trained in ancient Egyptian history and archaeology; on this tour, yours meets you at your hotel. The table follows the tour's stop list. Each drive is from the previous point and comes from map routing without traffic, so read it as the shortest that leg can take.

StopWhat the tour listsDrive, without traffic
Catacombs of Kom El ShoqafaUnderground tombs from the 2nd century AD that mix Egyptian, Greek and Roman styles, with the Triclinium hall (a Roman-style dining room)3.8 km from your hotel, about 6 min
Roman TheaterRoman-period theater with marble seating and mosaic floors2.7 km from the catacombs, about 5 min
Bibliotheca AlexandrinaModern library built as a revival of the ancient Library of Alexandria2.5 km from the Roman Theater, about 4 min
Pompey's PillarRoman column among the ruins of the Serapeum temple complex4.9 km from the Bibliotheca, about 6 min
Citadel of QaitbayFortress from the 15th century on the coast, built on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria5.9 km from Pompey's Pillar, about 7 min
LunchAt a local restaurant, includedNot located in the tour's data
Montaza Palace GardensRoyal park on the Mediterranean; the palace is seen from the outside19 km from Qaitbay, about 25 min
Stanley BridgeA short walk with views of the Mediterranean coastline9.9 km from Montaza, about 15 min
Back to your hotelDrop-off at your hotel in Alexandria7 km from Stanley Bridge, about 8 min

The first and last legs depend on where you stay. One quirk of the listed order: Pompey's Pillar stands next to the catacombs, yet it comes after the Bibliotheca, so the route doubles back. If the order matters to you, ask when you book.

What is included

The tour is private, just your group. Its included list covers pickup and drop-off at your hotel in Alexandria, all transfers in a private air-conditioned vehicle, a professional Egyptologist guide, entrance fees to all the attractions it names, bottled water, lunch at a local restaurant, and all service charges and taxes. Personal expenses, optional activities and tips are not included.

Tickets at the four ticketed stops

Entrance fees are in the included list, so you don't buy these tickets yourself. For reference, the table gives the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities prices for foreign visitors, in Egyptian pounds (EGP). Our sources hold no prices for the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Montaza gardens or Stanley Bridge.

A student ticket needs a valid student ID, and the student must be 24 or younger; children under 6 enter Ministry sites free.

Hours and Ramadan

On the Ministry's ticketing portal, all four ticketed stops have an earlier last entry (the latest time a site lets visitors in) during Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, and Qaitbay's last entry is later in summer than in winter. The Ministry advises arriving at least one hour before a site's closing time. The times on our tour pages are approximate, so ask for the pickup time when you book.

Weather

Several stops are in the open air, from the Roman Theater to the Montaza gardens and the walk at Stanley Bridge. In Alexandria the average daily high runs from 18.3°C in January to 30.4°C in August, according to World Meteorological Organization climate normals; these are monthly averages, not forecasts.

From Cairo, or with a guide only

Staying in Cairo? Alexandria in a day from Cairo is a private tour from your Cairo or Giza hotel to five of the same places: the catacombs, Pompey's Pillar, the Roman Theater, Qaitbay and, after lunch, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina; Montaza and Stanley Bridge are not on it. The first stop is 216.1 km from your hotel, about 2 h 26 min without traffic. It is a new tour on this site: its program follows how the day usually runs and is confirmed with your quote. The Alexandria day trip from Cairo guide covers that day. To pick your own sites and their order, book a guide only in Alexandria: a licensed guide who speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French or Italian, for the hours you book; a car and the entrance fees can be added on request.

Other days from Alexandria

Our other day tours from Alexandria leave the city. The table gives each one's drive from your hotel to its first stop, without traffic.
