Friday prayer, holidays and closures: planning a day tour around them

Mosques at midday prayer, the Friday-Saturday weekend, holidays, site closing days and how to move a date.

In short
  • Egypt's weekend is Friday and Saturday; guides say mosque visits go outside prayer times, and Al-Azhar closes for Friday noon prayers.
  • Saint Catherine's Monastery states it is closed on Fridays and Sundays; the Nubian Museum and NMEC have Friday evening hours.
  • Eid dates follow the Islamic calendar: Eid al-Fitr was listed for March 20, 2026 and Eid al-Adha for May 27, 2026.
  • No cut-off time for a request; stops can be skipped or reordered where the tour allows.
  • Once booked, the date can be changed free of charge up to 24 hours before, subject to availability.

Egypt's weekend is Friday and Saturday, guides say mosque visits belong outside the midday prayer, and public holidays can change hours. On a Friday, put mosque stops before or after midday and check the closing day of each site. To move a date or reorder stops, say so in your request: there is no cut-off time, and the reply comes within an hour at most.

What changes on a Friday

Friday is the weekly day of congregational prayer at midday, and the weekend in Egypt is Friday and Saturday. Wikipedia adds that government offices rest on Friday, banks and many institutes also rest on Saturday, and some shops keep Sunday. This matters on a day tour in three ways.

  • Mosques: guides say visitors are welcome outside prayer times and never during prayer. One guide says Al-Azhar Mosque is closed during Friday noon prayers. None of the guides gives a fixed window, so ask the mosque or your guide for that day.
  • Offices and banks: not a day-tour matter, but cash and paperwork are easier Sunday to Thursday.
  • Shops: hours are set shop by shop. The Khan El Khalili guide shows how widely published hours differ.

For dress and shoes at mosques, see visiting mosques and churches on Egypt day tours. The Islamic Cairo and Al-Muizz Street half day starts at Al-Azhar Mosque, so it is the tour where a Friday matters most.

Sites that publish a Friday rule

These are the cases where an official or site-owner page, or a travel guide, states a Friday rule. Hours change, so confirm them for your date.

SiteWhat the page says about Friday
National Museum of Egyptian CivilizationFriday hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a second evening period from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and last ticket at 8 p.m. (Ministry portal, read in August 2026).
Nubian Museum, AswanEvening hours on Thursday and Friday run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the ticket window closes at 8 p.m. (Ministry page).
Saint Catherine's Monastery, SinaiAs a rule the monastery is closed on Fridays and Sundays and on major Greek Orthodox feast days (the monastery's own website).
Al-Azhar Mosque, CairoClosed during Friday noon prayers, per one travel guide; hours also vary in Ramadan and on religious holidays.

The monastery rule affects the Mount Sinai tours that include it, such as Mount Sinai and St Catherine's Monastery. If your date falls on a Friday, ask before booking; the site is covered on the St Catherine place page. For other sites, the opening hours guide lists what the Ministry publishes. The museum tours are National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and Nubian Museum.

Public holidays and Eid

Some holidays fall on fixed dates and others follow the Islamic calendar, so their dates shift from year to year.

HolidayDate
Christmas, Coptic calendarJanuary 7
Revolution Day and Police DayJanuary 25
Sinai Liberation DayApril 25
Labour DayMay 1
Anniversary of the June revolutionJune 30
National DayJuly 23
Armed Forces DayOctober 6
Eid al-Fitr (end of Ramadan)Three days; listed for March 20, 2026
Eid al-AdhaFour days; listed for May 27, 2026

Hours at sites and museums can change around holidays: the guide that mentions it says only that hours "may vary" and to check with the site. No source I found says which sites close on Eid, so confirm it for your dates. Ramadan has its own hours, covered in Ramadan and Egypt day tours.

How to ask us to plan around a closure

These are our booking terms, not customs. A stop can be skipped or the order changed where the tour allows: ask before booking, and the reply tells you what is possible. A request can be for tomorrow or even the same day, with no cut-off time, and the reply comes within an hour at most; if the date is not possible, you are told straight away. Once booked, the date can be changed free of charge up to 24 hours before, subject to availability, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the tour starts.

When you write, include the date, the tour, and whether you can move by a day. Add the one site that matters most to you, for example "I want Al-Azhar Mosque open" or "I want the monastery". Use the contact page.
