Abu Simbel or Philae: which day from Aswan?

A long road day to Abu Simbel or a short boat ride to Philae: how the two Aswan days compare.

The Temple of Nefertari at Abu Simbel
In short
  • Abu Simbel is 283.4 km from an Aswan hotel, about 3 h 26 min without traffic.
  • Two of our Philae days start at the High Dam, 20.6 km from the hotel, about 20 min without traffic; a third goes by motorboat to the island alone.
  • Last entry is 4 PM at Abu Simbel and 3 PM at Philae, in every season.
  • Both belong to the UNESCO listing Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae, inscribed in 1979.
  • No tour on this site combines the two in one day.

Pick Philae if you have one day in Aswan and want more of the town in it; pick Abu Simbel if its two temples are the reason you came south and you accept close to seven hours of driving without traffic. Abu Simbel is 283.4 km from an Aswan hotel; Philae is a short motorboat ride from a marina.

Questions

What is the best way to travel from Aswan to Abu Simbel?

On this site it is by road. Our Abu Simbel tour drives you in a private air-conditioned vehicle, 283.4 km out, about 3 h 26 min without traffic, and 283.2 km back, about 3 h 25 min; it is not one of the tours on this site that travel by plane. The tour lists no stops on the road and no meal, so bring food and extra water.

Is a day trip to Abu Simbel worth it?

It is if the Great Temple of Ramses II and the Temple of Nefertari matter more to you than the rest of Aswan: the day spends close to seven hours on the road without traffic, for two temples and no other stops. If that is too much, Philae, part of the same UNESCO listing, the Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae (inscribed in 1979), fits into a day with the High Dam. Note that the Abu Simbel ticket costs more on February 22 and October 22.

With two days in Aswan

Do both, on separate days: no tour on this site combines them. Our Abu Simbel tour takes one day; for the other, the High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk and Philae tour, the shorter High Dam and Philae Temple tour, or Philae Temple by boat, which goes to the island alone; all three are private, with an English-speaking Egyptologist guide and the motorboat included. The Philae show can fill an evening; Philae by day or at the show compares the two.

In Aswan the average daily high is 39.0°C or more from May to September and 22.9°C in January, which matters most on the long road day. More on that day in Abu Simbel from Aswan; every Aswan tour is on the Aswan page.
