Shopping stops on Egypt day tours: what to expect and how to skip them

Five tours have an optional shopping stop and four have one in the program; ask before booking to skip it.

In short
  • Five tours list an optional shopping stop: four in Cairo, where you can skip it and go straight back to your hotel, and Kom Ombo and Edfu from Aswan, where it happens only if you ask.
  • Four more tours say the shopping stop is part of the program: the pyramids sound and light show with dinner, Luxor East and West Banks, Luxor in a day from Marsa Alam, and Mount Sinai from Sharm El Sheikh.
  • The tour page shows the stop in the order of the day, so you see it before you book.
  • To skip a stop or change the order, ask before booking: you are told what is possible for that tour.

Some Egypt day tours include a shopping stop, and the tour page says which. Five tours list an optional stop you can skip, and four more carry a stop as part of the program. To skip one, or to change the order of the day, ask before you book: the reply tells you what is possible for that tour.

How a shopping stop appears on a tour page

A shopping stop is a pause at a shop, a workshop or a market during the day. On Egypt Day Tours (egyptdaytours.net), a site dedicated to day tours in Egypt, each tour page shows the whole day stop by stop, in order, so a shopping stop is a line in the day like any other. The key facts at the top carry a "Shopping stop" line in one of three forms:

The page saysWhat it means for you
OptionalThe stop is in the plan, and you can skip it. The page says to skip it if you would rather go straight back to your hotel.
Only if you askNo stop is planned. It happens only if you ask for one.
Yes, part of the programThe stop is part of the day. If you want it removed, ask before booking.

A tour page without that line lists no shopping stop.

The tours with an optional stop

Five tours list one. Four are in Cairo and offer the same optional stop, at Khan El Khalili or near the pyramids; the fifth is in Aswan.

TourWhat the page says
Pyramids, Memphis and SaqqaraOptional: Khan El Khalili or near the pyramids, at the end of the day
Giza pyramids and the Egyptian MuseumOptional: Khan El Khalili or near the pyramids
Grand Egyptian Museum and the pyramidsOptional: Khan El Khalili or near the pyramids
Egyptian Museum, the Citadel and Coptic CairoOptional: Khan El Khalili or near the pyramids
Kom Ombo and Edfu from AswanOnly if you ask: the included list has optional shopping stops in Aswan, upon request

The tours with a stop in the program

Four tours say the shopping stop is part of the program. The page of each tour shows how it looks:

TourThe stop
Luxor East and West Banks in one dayAn alabaster workshop, to see traditional craftsmanship, before lunch
Mount Sinai and St Catherine's MonasteryThe local markets in Dahab, which sell handmade crafts, jewelry and souvenirs, after lunch
Luxor in a day, from Marsa AlamListed as shopping opportunities in Luxor
Pyramids sound and light show with dinnerMarked as part of the program in the key facts

When the market is the point

On some days the bazaar is a destination, not a stop between sites. The Khan El Khalili walk goes through the lanes of the old market with a guide, and the Old Sharm tour is an evening in the old market. On the Cairo days from the Red Sea and on the Islamic Cairo days, Khan El Khalili is a stop with time to browse; read about the place in Khan El Khalili. These are tours where you can shop, and the page says so.

How to ask before booking

You can skip a stop or change the order of the day where the tour allows it. The way to find out is to ask before you book, and you are told what is possible for that tour. Three questions cover it:

  1. Does this tour have a shopping stop, and is it optional?
  2. Can it be left out, and where does the day go straight to instead?
  3. If I leave it out, does the tour end earlier, or do I get more time at a site?

Put them in the same message as your date, hotel and number of people (see what to send when you request a quote), or send them from the contact page. More questions worth asking are in questions to ask before booking an Egypt day tour.

A shopping stop is neither good nor bad in itself. It is a choice about how to spend part of the day, and the tour page lets you make it before you pay. If you want the whole day at the sites, choose a tour without the line, or ask for the stop to be left out. If you want a souvenir, an optional stop is the easy way to get one.
