A boat on clear water in the Red Sea
In short
  • Giftun (from Hurghada): two snorkeling stops with an English-speaking instructor, beach time on the island, open buffet lunch on board.
  • Tiran (from Sharm El Sheikh): the Blue Lagoon and several reef stops, with the boat sailing northeast into the Gulf of Aqaba.
  • Port Ghalib (from Marsa Alam): Marsa El Shone and Marsa Mubarak, then a Zodiac to a lagoon; the drive back is 65 km, about 49 min without traffic.
  • Snorkeling equipment and lunch on board are included on all three.
  • Average July highs: 35.0°C in Hurghada and 37.9°C in Sharm El Sheikh.

Pick by where you are staying: each of these boat days collects you at hotels in one resort. Giftun Island runs from Hurghada, Tiran Island from Sharm El Sheikh, and Port Ghalib from Marsa Alam. Giftun adds beach time and an instructor; Tiran sails into the Gulf of Aqaba; Port Ghalib adds a Zodiac (a small speedboat) to a lagoon. Each resort also has a second sea day, compared further down.

The three sea days side by side

Snorkeling means swimming at the surface with a mask, a breathing tube and fins to look at the reef below. The table compares what each tour itself lists.

Giftun from Hurghada

Giftun is the only one of the three with beach time in its listing. The day has two snorkeling stops on the reefs around Giftun Island with an English-speaking instructor, equipment included, then free time on the island's beach, an open buffet lunch on board and the return to the harbor. The listing mentions water sports on the island, but they are not among the inclusions, so they may cost extra.

Tiran from Sharm El Sheikh

The Tiran boat sails northeast of Sharm El Sheikh into the Gulf of Aqaba. You swim, snorkel or relax at the Blue Lagoon, make several more reef stops, have an open buffet lunch on board, and get more time to swim or snorkel as the boat sails toward Tiran Island before it returns to the marina. Apart from the Blue Lagoon the spots are not named and their number is not fixed, and the listing does not say you go ashore on Tiran. A tour leader is listed rather than a snorkeling instructor, and diving is an optional extra.

Port Ghalib from Marsa Alam

This boat leaves from the Port Ghalib marina. The first snorkeling stop is Marsa El Shone, the second the Marsa Mubarak lagoon; after lunch on board, a Zodiac takes you to a nearby lagoon to relax or snorkel again before the boat sails back. The drive from Port Ghalib to your hotel is 65 km, about 49 min without traffic. The inclusions say one to two snorkeling stops while the itinerary describes two plus the lagoon, so confirm the plan when you book through our contact page.

A second sea day from each resort

Each of these also collects you at your hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle and includes snorkeling equipment, lunch on board and bottled water; the boat is shared with other guests. They are newer on this site: the program follows how the market runs that day and is confirmed with your quote.

Which one to choose

  • Staying in Hurghada: Giftun, with beach time on the island, or Dolphin House, for the reef where dolphins are often seen.
  • Staying in Sharm El Sheikh: Tiran, for the Blue Lagoon and reef stops in the Gulf of Aqaba, or Ras Mohammed and White Island.
  • Staying in Marsa Alam: Port Ghalib, with the Zodiac run to a lagoon, or Samadai, the spinner dolphins' lagoon.
  • Snorkeling for the first time: Giftun is the only one of these sea days that lists an English-speaking instructor.
