In short
  • Giftun Island: two snorkeling stops, with gear and an English-speaking instructor included.
  • The Sindbad submarine goes down to 22 meters below sea level, so you see the reef without swimming.
  • Giftun and Dolphin House are full days at sea; the submarine trip is about two hours.
  • Lunch is an open buffet on board at Giftun; the submarine trip has no meal.
  • Hurghada's average daily high is 21.7°C in January and 35.1°C in August.

Choose a snorkeling trip if you want to be in the water, the submarine if you do not. Our Giftun Island snorkeling trip is a full day at sea with two snorkeling stops, time on the beach and lunch on board; the Dolphin House trip is a full day at sea too, with lunch on board. The Sindbad submarine is a trip of about two hours that goes down to 22 meters below sea level, where you watch the reef through large panoramic windows.

What the snorkeling day involves

Snorkeling means swimming at the surface with a mask, a breathing tube and fins, looking down at the reef. The Giftun Island trip stops at two different spots with an English-speaking instructor, and the equipment is included. Between the stops you get free time on the beach at Giftun Island, and an open buffet lunch is served aboard the boat. The itinerary also mentions water sports on the beach; they are not in the included list, so they may cost extra.

What the Dolphin House day involves

The Dolphin House trip picks you up at your Hurghada hotel and sails from a marina on a boat shared with other guests; the transfers are private. The first stop is the Dolphin House reef, where wild dolphins are often seen, though sightings are not guaranteed. Lunch is served on board, then comes a second snorkeling stop before the sail back; the equipment and bottled water are included. It is one of the site's newer tours: its program follows how the day usually runs and is confirmed with your quote.

What the submarine trip involves

The Sindbad submarine shows the reef without getting wet. It goes down to 22 meters below sea level and has large panoramic windows, and the entry ticket is part of the trip. A tour leader goes with you, and the transfers from your hotel are included. Two points to ask when you book: where the submarine leaves from, and whether its two hours include the drive from your hotel.

Which one fits your day

  • Non-swimmers: the submarine. Nothing on it requires you to swim.
  • Short on time: the submarine is about two hours; both snorkeling trips take the whole day.
  • A day off at sea: Giftun, with two reef stops, beach time and lunch on board.
  • Hoping to see dolphins: Dolphin House, where they are often seen but not guaranteed.
  • Winter: Hurghada's average daily high is 21.7°C in January, with an average low of 11.2°C; in August the average high is 35.1°C. These are air averages, not sea temperatures.

Other days out from the resort, including the desert and Cairo, are compared in Hurghada day trips compared, and more boat days are on the sea experiences page.

Questions

Where are the best snorkeling spots in Hurghada?

This guide has no checked ranking of Hurghada's reefs, so it names none as best. The snorkeling days on this site from Hurghada are boat trips to two spots on the reefs around Giftun Island and to the Dolphin House reef. From other resorts, the sea days sail toward Tiran Island and to the reefs of Ras Mohammed from Sharm El Sheikh, and to Marsa Mubarak from Port Ghalib and the Samadai reef from Marsa Alam; Giftun, Tiran and Port Ghalib are compared in Giftun, Tiran or Port Ghalib. All Hurghada tours are on the Hurghada page.
