The mountains of South Sinai
In short
  • From Dahab, Mount Sinai is 129 km away, about 2 h 6 min without traffic; from Sharm El Sheikh, 215.6 km, about 3 h 10 min.
  • Both tours climb at night to reach the summit for sunrise and include entry to St Catherine's Monastery.
  • Only the Sharm El Sheikh tour lists a Bedouin guide for the climb.
  • The Sharm El Sheikh tour returns by way of Dahab, with an optional lunch and time at the markets.
  • Both tours are private, just your group.

The climb is the same; the drive is not. From Dahab, Mount Sinai is 129 km away, about 2 h 6 min without traffic; from Sharm El Sheikh it is 215.6 km, about 3 h 10 min. If you stay in Sharm El Sheikh, our tour from there adds a Bedouin guide for the climb and comes back by way of Dahab.

All drive times come from map routing without traffic. Both tours pick you up at your hotel in their own town: Sharm El Sheikh or Dahab.

What the longer day from Sharm El Sheikh adds

The Sharm El Sheikh tour starts with a night drive across the Sinai Desert. It is the only one of the two that lists a Bedouin guide for the climb. After the summit and St Catherine's Monastery, it drives to Dahab for an optional lunch at a seaside restaurant and time at the local markets, which sell handmade crafts, jewelry and souvenirs, then returns to Sharm El Sheikh. So the extra road buys you a second guide and an afternoon in Dahab, at the cost of the longest drive on either tour.

What the day from Dahab leaves out

The Dahab tour goes straight there and straight back. Its listing names an English-speaking tour guide but no separate Bedouin guide, and no meal. The monastery visit covers its collection of old icons, manuscripts and religious objects and the Burning Bush site.

What both tours share

  • The climb at night, timed to reach the summit for sunrise. Mount Sinai is traditionally held to be where Moses received the Ten Commandments.
  • St Catherine's Monastery is 9.3 km from Mount Sinai, about 42 min without traffic, and its entry fee is included.
  • UNESCO inscribed the Saint Catherine Area on its World Heritage list in 2002.

How the night itself runs, step by step, is in Mount Sinai at night; what a long overnight day asks of you is in early starts and long drives.

Before you book

  • Pickup time: clock times on the tour pages are approximate, and the pickup time is confirmed when you book, because traffic and your hotel's location change it.
  • Travel advice: as checked on 13 August 2026, UK government (FCDO) advice was against all but essential travel to northern South Sinai beyond the St Catherine-Nuweiba road. Check the current advice before you book.

Other days out from the resort are on the Sharm El Sheikh page.
